Marathon Canoe Kayak Race Development in Ontario

Race Development Program (RDP)

The Race Development Program (RDP) at OMCKRA is designed with the aim of enhancing the quantity and calibre of Marathon races and organizers throughout Ontario.


At the core of our efforts lie Marathon races, which serve as the cornerstone of our endeavours. Our dedicated race support committee is committed to assisting race organizers in achieving success and ensuring the safety and prosperity of their events. We offer guidance on documentation, insurance matters, valuable advice, and training opportunities.


Key areas of focus within our program include:


  • Marathon Safety and Boat Specification Policies: We emphasize the significance of adhering to safety and boat specification policies, particularly in the context of long-distance races, and provide support in understanding and implementing these policies effectively.
  • Insurance Policy and Requirements: Our program provides comprehensive information on the insurance policy in place and its associated requirements, equipping organizers with the knowledge needed to ensure compliance and mitigate potential risks effectively.

Short-Term Objectives Within the ABC Tactics

Accreditation


  • Review and approve Ontario races for sanctioned/recognized status.
  • Evaluate and approve the Ontario Qualifier race for Marathon Worlds.


Building Blocks


  • Provide sample Emergency Action Plans.
  • Develop safety and boat specification policies and insurance forms.
  • Offer feedback on requests for sanctioning and conduct post-race assessments.
  • Provide training on standard boat class nomenclature, insurance procedures, and emergency action plans.


Collaboration


  • Utilize web, newsletter, and social media platforms to promote races.
  • Conduct meetings with organizers to foster collaboration.
  • Produce reports summarizing meeting outcomes.
  • Facilitate the sharing of experiences among Race Organizers.
  • Implement joint race points series to enhance collaboration and participation.

OMCKRA's Paddler Development Programme

Paddler Development Program (PDP)

The objective of OMCKRA's Paddler Development Program (PDP) is to bolster the quantity and skill level of marathon paddlers across Ontario.


Key Focus Areas Include:


  • Skills Assessment and Development: Implementing assessments to evaluate paddling skills and providing targeted development programs to enhance proficiency.
  • Measurement of Success: Establish metrics to gauge the effectiveness of the program and track the progress of paddlers over time.
  • Increasing Proficiency Across Age and Ability Levels: Offering training and development opportunities tailored to paddlers of all ages and skill levels to ensure continuous improvement and inclusivity within the sport.

Short-term Objectives within the ABC Tactics

Accreditation


  • Develop an accreditation process to establish standards.
  • Implement the MCRC checklist to assess paddler proficiency.
  • Categorize athletes based on proficiency levels and assign them to provincial teams.
  • Introduce a points system to incentivize and reward paddlers.

Building Blocks


  • Offer paddling clinics to enhance paddlers' skills and knowledge.
  • Update the manual and distribute it to all paddlers.
  • Provide training guides on the website, newsletter, and other communication channels.
  • Offer merchandise for purchase to support the program.

Collaboration


  • Keep paddlers informed about events through various channels such as newsletters, webpages, Facebook, email, and annual meetings.
  • Encourage paddlers to share their stories through newsletters and social media platforms.
  • Organize social events to foster a sense of community among members.
  • Solicit input and feedback from members to continuously improve the program.

Coach Development Program (CDP)

The objective of OMCKRA's Coach Development Program (CDP) is to enhance the quality and quantity of marathon coaching across Ontario.


Key Components of the Program:


  • Coach 'Locker' and Materials: Providing coaches with a centralized repository of resources and materials to support their coaching endeavours effectively.
  • Training and Support: Offering comprehensive training and ongoing support to increase the number of NCCP-certified Marathon Coaches, Facilitators, and Evaluators.


Through these initiatives, OMCKRA aims to elevate the standard of marathon coaching in Ontario and empower coaches to facilitate the growth and development of paddlers in the sport.

Short-Term Objectives Within the ABC Tactics:

Accreditation


  • Conduct coach training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Certify trained coaches to ensure competence and credibility.
  • Encourage coaches to utilize the coach 'Locker' for access to resources and materials.
  • Ensure coaches are equipped with first aid and CPR certifications.
  • Facilitate ongoing Professional Development (PD) opportunities for coaches.
  • Ensure all active coaches obtain Safe Sport certification to prioritize athlete safety.

Building Blocks


  • Supply buoys and technical CDs to support coaching activities.
  • Update and distribute the coaching manual to provide up-to-date guidance.
  • Provide comprehensive training sessions to empower coaches with the necessary skills and knowledge.
